Ralph Gibson
Ralph Gibson is an American Art Photographer born on the 16th January in 1939 in Los Angeles, California. With being born in Los Angeles and residing in New York, Gibson has constantly been surrounded by iconic buildings, monuments and views. Although these places aren't necessarily reflected in his photographs he will have still taken inspiration from the locations around him.
He began his studies of photography in the US Navy then moved on to the San Francisco Art Institute, from there he went straight into the industry and became assistants to professional artists such as Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. Ralph's work is included in over 150 museums world wide and has appeared in hundreds of exhibitions. These exhibits are listed below:

Some of Ralph's work:
Ralph Gibson uses Chiaroscuro in his photographs which is where there is strong contrasts between light and dark aspects of a photograph or piece, usually this affects the composition of the piece as the positioning of the subject is dependant on the light source. Ralph's photographs are based on a range of things mainly featuring still life and the human body, mainly females. His photographs are all very stylised and although to they eye may appear to be simple composure and subjects from everyday life, it is the lighting that makes the photographs so interesting; I can really appreciate how long it must have taken him to get the lighting exactly how he wanted it for these photographs. My favourite of these 4 images is the one of the woman's torso, I think the lines made from the shadows are very well placed as they outline the lines of the females body.
I don't think Ralph Gibson created his photography with a specific target audience in mind, however since looking at his work I think although his work can be appreciated by various audiences depending on their taste, his work can be appreciated much more by people who have quite a good knowledge of photography and how to set up such lighting as you can then appreciate how long it must have taken him to get the lines and contrast Gibson has in these photographs.
Whilst researching Ralph Gibson, I came across an interview that had taken place by Chris Maher and Larry Berman on the 9th June 2001 which although an old interview is still very interesting as Ralph talks about his influences and the reasons behind the photographs he takes. Rather than writing out the whole interview, here is the link:

Case study #2
David Lake
David Lake was originally just a photographer for a hobby, he didn't take up any courses on it or have any specific training, he just decided in to go to print as one of the official Lomo Photographers for Manchester's Commonwealth Games in 2002 in the commemorative book called "Spirit".
From covering such a positive and motivational event, David then went to cover the after effects of the Asian Tsunami in 2004. An exhibition in Manchester "People of the Tsunami" followed the same year.
Ralph's exhibitions:
2002
Spirit, Manchester - An exhibition of his Manchester Commonwealth Games work.
2004
People of the Tsunami, Manchester - An exhibition of his work of the after effects of the Asian Tsunami
Although there isn't much information about David's influences as a photographer, I imagine with coming from Manchester, a very photographic city, he was not lacking in inspiration and the urge to go out and capture different scenes.
David's Clients
- Weddings
- Events
- Portraits
David's most recent exhibition has been in Manchester at The Lowry Hotel in Salford and is called "Leica Postcards". Leica postcards juxtaposes pictures of places and people to show off the work of David Lake. The snapshots are photographs David has taken when on his trips across the globe.

Case Study #3
Tom Munro
Tom Munro is internationally recognised for his clear and iconic celebrity shots. Tom originated from England but moved to New York in the early 90's in order to register for Parsons School of Design. He first learnt his skills when on an apprenticeship for some of the biggest names in the business. From then, he has developed and gone to work professionally for himself and has features in magazines such as Vogue Italie, Harper's Bazaar and Elle.
Tom has worked with a number of celebrities during his professional career including Madonna, Beyonce, Daniel Craig and the current pop sensation Lady GAGA. Not only has he worked with big names A listers but he has also worked with big names within the fashion industry; Chloe, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Armani.
Tom's latest exhibition was held in 2010 in Los Angeles where he exhibited work of Johnny Depp, Lady GAGA, Tom Cruise, Beyonce and many others.
I really like Tom's work because a lot of his fashion and celebrity shots are not taken in the stereotypical studio scene for those type of shots, they are taken in an environment that could be seen to represent the celebrity that is in the photograph. I think this is a good method to use when taking a photograph as if the subject is in a location they feel comfortable in it is much more likely that you are going to get a photograph that is natural looking.
